NSW: Police continue stand off with rioting Redfern youth

A standoff continues between police and a group of youths in inner city Sydney, seven
hours after a riot broke out last night.

Police were called to Redfern about 6pm (AEDT) after reports of a group of youths throwing
rocks and bottles at passing vehicles.

A police spokesman says Redfern train station remains closed after it was set alight,
but the damage does not appear to be major.

The spokesman says the trouble seems to be have been sparked by the death of 17-year-old
THOMAS HICKEY who was impaled on a metal fence after he was thrown from his bicycle.

He died in hospital early yesterday morning from his injuries.

THOMAS'S mother claims her son was pursued by police, but they deny the allegations.

The spokesman says negotiators are now speaking with aboriginal leaders in the area
to try and resolve the situation peacefully.

Riot police and the fire brigade are in attendance.
